UT Podcast:

This first set of podcasts was done at UT and each topic contains a unique connection to the university. Each one had different requirements and restrictions both in content and duration. I was allowed quite a bit of freedom with the first two which allowed me to put a more creative stamp on them. I was much more limited with the second two so they reflect a more traditional style.

The podcasts can be played below through the embedded player. I also created an RSS feed which is compatible with iTunes and other podcast aggregators. The descriptions below explain what went into each podcast so I encourage you to listen first, then read the descriptions.

Play Yuiko Matsumoto

This podcast was done in a Radio Lab style. I began with an interview of a UT graduate student. I then added a combination of narration, natural sounds, sound effects, and music to get the end product.

Music was my biggest focus for this podcast. I chose the music during the chromosome description so that it would be child-like and fun. This was done to get the listener to connect to the natural curiosity we have when we learn something new. As the podcast continues the music transitions to a more serious tone and ends a little darker to match the close of the subject.

Play Profanity - Warning - Contains Explicit Language

This podcast was done in a more experimental style. Since the subject matter for this podcast often makes people uncomfortable my intention was to transfer that feeling to the final product. I used no introduction or narration and layered music across the entire podcast to both connect the various interviews together and keep a constant feeling throughout it.

It begins with an interview with Dr. Ian Hancock who is a professor of linguistics and the development of the English language. He is meant to be the expert in the podcast. I then used selected sound bites from interviews with five other people.

Play Reporting Texas

This podcast was done in a more traditional news style. It contains a short sound effect at the opening then is strictly interviews and narration. I chose two separate people, Kelly Kaufhold and Monica Chadha, to discuss the same subject and formatted the podcast with one interview in each half. I introduce Kelly but rather than break the flow of the podcast by stopping to introduce Monica I used part of Kelly's interview to tie them together.

Play Cynthia Wallace

This podcast was primarily an exercise in editing. I was required to take a 45 minute talk given by Cynthia Wallace, which covered a wide variety of subjects, and cut it to under 2:30. I began by finding the most interesting parts, tagging each with a subject, then choosing the best combination of clips and subject. I then added short narration between each clip to keep the flow.

After Under:

After speaking with several graduate students for UT Podcast I decided to create a separate series that focuses on graduate students at UT Austin I used my previous interviews and then interviewed other graduate students. I focused on the research, studies, and projects that they were involved with. The interesting things that they spend their time working on that most people don't ever get to hear about unless they're involved. The style of this series is more traditional with only interviews and narration. I did all the recording and editing as well as created the RSS feed.
